These are the tracks I’ve been loving this week!
Call Me Out – Saorsa
‘Call Me Out’ is the delicate new release from Saorsa’s EP of the same title, and is an atmospheric and haunting tale of loss. This song is reverberating with emotion, but has a gentle quietness to it that allows your own stories and personal experiences be projected really effectively. Saorsa’s vocals sit in this middle range for the majority of this track, giving her lyrics a real conversational candidness to them, almost like you’re talking to a friend. The ending of the track really ramps up the atmospheric textures, and has this emotional climax that the harmonies beautifully accentuate. ‘Call Me Out’ is melancholic, but doesn’t drown you in this wash of hopelessness; Saorsa has been so graceful with creating a song that feels quite personal and emotive, but still leaves you with a sense of optimism and encouragement
We Can Pretend – Annie Elise
‘We Can Pretend’ is the latest release form U.S indie pop artist Annie Elise, and is the definition of sparkly, feminine electronica. This track has a sweet Vapour Wave groove to it with a lush chorus that feels dreamy and light. Annie Elise vocal presence in this track feels almost mystical as she sits in this high register among a field of pulsating synthesisers and mellowed out trap beats. ‘We Can Pretend’ is about a desire for the convergence of the dream world and reality, and a freedom found in the false reality we can create in our mind. Annie Elise is breaking into the electronic scene with full force with ‘We Can Pretend’, having crafted a vibrant virtual world to get lost in, and has captured this all too familiar feeling of having your dreams feels bigger and more real that the virtual life this last year has subjected us to.
Forest – S.A.A.R.A
If you’re looking for your new favourite Jungle Jazz Alt Pop banger, look no further than S.A.A.R.A who is completely defying expectations with the energetic new release ‘Forest’. This track is incredibly dynamic, with flutes and funky bass lines pulsating in between a strong electronic dance back line. S.A.A.R.A’S vocals come in bringing all that 70’s disco glory, as her personality and charisma are on full display with the backing vocals supporting her all the way. ‘Forest’ has such a unique blend of instrumentation, but each part fits into the overall puzzle of the track in a way that feels fresh and original. In the same way that the sonic atmosphere is a blend of characteristics, the message behind ‘Forest’ explores the blending of our real and virtual world. This release is a window into a new world of music, a world of freedom and exploration, and is something we can’t wait to see more of from S.A.A.R.A
Closure – Hasitha Guhan
Hasitha Guhan is the emerging pop princess from Washington D.C who is braving the complicated terrain around emotional responsibility around ghosting in her newest release ‘Closure’. A fundamentally toxic bi-product of our 24/7 online lives is that being ignored is no longer a quiet action that feels accidental; being on our phones all day every day warrants intention behind not replying, and this is the root of where Hasitha is singing from in her track. ‘Closure’ is an electronic commercially polished pop track that highlights Hasitha’s belting and improvisational melodies. Hasitha is harnessing the essence of Gen Z, developing this modern trap-pop track about a construct exclusive to the last 10 years of social media, and sharing her content on explosively viral apps like TikTok, confirming that she is an artist who is speaking to her peers about relatability and the shared experience.
Scared Now – Shayla McDaniel
U.S indie-funk artist Shayla McDaniel is bringing all that ‘uh-oh’ energy with her neo-soul track ‘Scared Now’. With huge reverby drums, a sexy backline of horns and slapping bass, and Shayla’s soul-filled charismatic vocal in the middle, ‘Scared Now’ is a fun track bound to get you through the humiliation of retrospection. Much of this track was developed with an improvisational aspect, which is clear in the way that Shayla’s vocals fit so naturally with the groove of the track. ‘Scared Now’ has clear inspiration from 70’s funk legends like Stevie Wonder, but many of the effects on the drums and vocals really bring this song into a modern scene. This song is so fun to listen to, and Shayla really showcases her abilities as soul songstress in her magnetic vocal characterisations, and in her lyric writing.
Crave Me – Sahara Beck
‘Crave Me’ is a textured, alt-pop banger from seasoned Brissie songwriter Sahara Beck, and is a “lullaby of desperation” towards her desires and dreams. There is something distinctly unique and characteristic about the atmosphere created in ‘Crave Me’, as it combines old world instrumentation, with the dynamic modernity of electronic production and the sharp clarity of Sahara’s vocals. The epic and cinematic climax of the chorus creates an almost confrontational cry as lines like “all I want is for you just to crave me” ring out in your ears, until the bridge draws you in with stripped back production and Sahara’s voice remaining bold and steadfast. Sahara Beck has used ‘Crave Me’ as her pulpit to express the confident and honest passion that drives a musician in such a tumultuous career, and in doing so has created excitement and anticipation for her coming projects and releases
Bright Red – Bailey Tomkinson
When music is used as a platform to spotlight an important cause, it elicits an emotional response for a listener who would otherwise had not known about the injustice, and in this case Bailey Tomkinson is using her soapbox to shed light on the destruction of the Cornish Coastal Headland by greedy developers. ‘Bright Red’ is an indie rock waltz, and Baileys vocal performance is emotional as she unpacks her feelings behind watching her beautiful landscape slowly becoming scenery only available for the disgustingly wealthy. ‘Bright Red’ captures this sad surf rock feeling, and the surfy grunge texture in the guitars is a gorgeous contrast to Bailey’s bright and light lead vocal. Bailey Tomkinson has written a track that is poetic and pointed on top of an instrumental that sways beautifully; if Cornwell throws a heart breaking good-bye event to its displaced locals and middle class tourists, ‘Bright Red’ would be the melancholy slow dance to close the night.
unrequited – Bella Taylor
‘unrequited’ is the delicate but cinematic opening track to the debut EP ‘tell me how you really feel?’ from Sydney indie songwriter and vocal powerhouse Bella Taylor. This track is skilfully crafted with spacious instrumentation and organic textures, and wall to wall with the natural melodic writing of the lead vocal. Bella’s prayer is that her project can bring a sense of peace and healing to her listeners, and ‘unrequited’ certainty offers that encouragement and comfort with a graceful hand. This release, and the other two emotionally vulnerable pieces on the EP, introduce Bella into the music industry as an artist committed to an authentic expression of self, and it leaves great anticipation to see more from her as an open and gentle writer. I Can’t Wait ‘Til This Doesn’t Matter – Pomaa
The sentiment behind a phrase like ‘I Can’t Wait ‘Til This Doesn’t Matter’ feels all too relatable as we live in this looping reality of lockdowns and restrictions, but Pomaa’s debut indie rock release is grounded in a yearning for inner peace. Reminiscent of indie rock icons like The Smiths and The Kooks, ‘I Can’t Wait ‘Til This Doesn’t Matter’ has a mellow drive with Pomaa’s melodies and lyrics being the cornerstones of the storytelling. This track is minimal in a way that really showcases her lead vocal as confident and commanding, but the presence of the guitar has a strong Dorian personality that really grounds the track in this folky sensibility. The irony of writing a song about wanting something to not matter isn’t lost on the listener as Pomaa’s lyrics are pointed and honest about the exhaustion of the day-to-day experience when emotionally weighed down by something seemingly out of your own control. This release is a grand entrance into the music world for Pomaa, and sets up so much anticipation for her next releases.
smoke alarms – Liz Moss
For a song named after the obnoxious blare of a smoke alarm, Liz Moss has really treated her listeners to a gentle and conversational acoustic track that works as a tapestry of her poetic writing and intimate vocal performance. With the warmth of our favourite crackly lofi atmospheres, the sweet strumming guitars, and the light three part harmonies, ‘smoke alarms’ is a beautiful convergence of indie folk music and bedroom dream pop. Liz wrote this track on her dorm room floor after the smoke alarm has rattled her building in the middle of the night, proving that art and beauty can be found anywhere so long as it can be harnessed by a creative spirit. ‘smoke alarms’ is the debut release of Liz Moss, but is already such a strong start to what we hope is a long and dreamy career in music
